How do you do high frequency words-whole group or individualized? (I am wanting to do Words Their Way for spelling patterns but want to touch on the Dolch words).

is planning on switching between the two. One week, we'll do WTW and the other week we'll focus on sight words. We are planning on modeling our spelling patterns after Beth Newingham's model. The sight words week we are using the superspeed reading that is on the whole brain teaching website. Check it out! It will be our first time trying it out. We have to level the entire grade level for reading, so each reading class will be given sight words for a spelling test. Each teacher will use sight words appropriate for their reading class.

WTW includes the sight words

The sight words are imbedded in the WTW sorts. The ones that don't fit the patterns are called "oddballs." I have up a sight word wall with the 200 Teachers' College sight words that cover grades k-2. Once they get through the Within Words Patterns sorts, they have covered them all. I assess them at least once a marking period to document their growth. I also send home the whole list of 200 words on a table so the parents can practice them at home. I don't do any special activities with them in class, and they always learn them through the sorts and using the sight word wall as a reference.
