I have been talking to teachers across my state and we were amazed how different schools are across our state (KY). I have a few questions about your school?

1. Do you have assistants in Kindergarten?

We have a full time assistant for every 24 kindergarten students.

2. Do you have assistants in other grades?

We have .5 assistants for every 24 students in grades 1-3.

3. How much planning time to you get on average?

We get 55 minutes daily.

4. Do you have a duty free lunch?

YOU BET!!!! I BELIEVE IT IS STATE LAW

1. Do you have assistants in Kindergarten?

No.

2. Do you have assistants in other grades?

No.

3. How much planning time to you get on average?

We get 100 minutes each week.

4. Do you have a duty free lunch?

Yes, 35 minutes.

5. How many recesses do you have each day? (Can I add this question?)
One for 4th/5th grades--it's 15 minutes, two for 1st-3rd--20 minutes and 15 minutes. This is duty free also. The primary 15 minute recess is supposed to be for planning. That's why they don't have any Specials.

How long are each of your recesses? Is this a part of your planning time?

1. Kindergarten does have assistants but I'm not sure of the time.

2. Last year grades K-3 had assistants but that may change this year due to the California budget mess.

3. Planning time? Oh, you bet we get planning time...as much as we want to put in OFF THE CLOCK! Grades 4&5 do get about 30 min/day of prep while their students are at PE, however.

4. We do have a duty free lunch.

At our school (sorry it's so long)

in Kindergarten, she had 29 students - most of the year by herself!!! I think she had an aid for no more than 1/2 a day - if that much.

Pre-K teachers had assistants everyday, unless they were needed to fill in other places because we couldn't get substitutes. Then those teachers were on their own with 14 to 16 children. (maybe more, I can't remember).

The rest of the classrooms did not have any help.

As for lunch, ALL teachers eat in the cafeteria with the students! YUCK!!!!!
I teach in a small school and there is NO teacher union members. I have thought about trying to get it started, but in that small of a school, I am almost certain, it would not go over well. So...... when our first year principal asked for suggestions for next year, I suggested we rotate lunch and recess duty (yes, we have recess duty also) so that we can at least once or twice each week have lunch by ourself, go out to get something, or use it to work in our rooms. We'll see.......

Planning time is during music/pe time and we get about 45 minutes (if the pe teacher is on time to pick up the students) and 40 minutes on music days by the time we walk them to the band room. PE and Music rotate. We don't have both on the same day.

This is definately the first school in 17 years of teaching that teachers have had to do lunch duty. I'm really hoping it wil change this year, but I'm not holding my breath.

1. Do you have assistants in Kindergarten?

Yes. I teach in private school -- the public school I left did not have any assistants in kindergarten.

2. Do you have assistants in other grades?
Yes, through second grade.

3. How much planning time to you get on average?
My kids have one 30 min resource everyday, and my kids have religion every day for 30 min (I do have to stay in the room for Religion, but I work at my desk) and then twice every six day rotation my kids have art and music which are both 40 minutes!

4. Do you have a duty free lunch?

No -- we eat cafeteria style with a mixture of kids -- not just our own students. (but we have lots of resources so I don't mind eating with the kids)

I teach at a residential treatment facility....my class consists of 10 15-20 year old high school students. I have 2 assisstants BUT most of the time one of them is pulled. I know that 10 students does not seem to be a lot but, with the behaviors (aggression, fighting, elopment etc.) that I have on a daily basis it is not enough. Not to mention most of my students out weigh me by 100 lbs and would kick my a&$ if they had the chance. Oh yeah, one of my assisstance is in her 60's God love her. Thank goodness I have male staff in the classroom next door for quick support!

Oh, I don't get any planning time and I am required to eat lunch with the students.

1. Do you have assistants in Kindergarten?

no (some IEP students have EA assistance but their needs are great and the EA works only with the assigned student)

2. Do you have assistants in other grades?

no (see above; no such thing as a classroom assistant)

3. How much planning time to you get on average?

200 minutes / 5 days

4. Do you have a duty free lunch?

40 minute uninterrupted lunch (in theory )

5. How many recesses do you get each day?

Kids get a total of 70 minutes recess each day -- 15 minute AM, 40 minute lunch, 15 minute PM.
Teachers have 80 minutes supervision/5 day -- either supervising lunch room or outside yard duty.

Our recess is suppose to be 10-15 minutes (daily if we choose). It is not part of planning.

1. Do you have assistants in Kindergarten?

We have a full time assistant in all K classes and pre-K as well. The school is not allowed to pull the pre-K aide for any duty or outside classroom responsibility-the state requires that there are 2 teachers with pre-K students at all times.

2. Do you have assistants in other grades?

Yes, for special needs students.

3. How much planning time to you get on average?

I get 30 minutes a day.

4. Do you have a duty free lunch?

Yes, 30 minutes.

I teach K...we don't get any specials (other than our paras taking our kids out for PE). The upper grades do-they have either PE or music every day and computer 5 days a week.

1. Do you have assistants in Kindergarten?

One in every class. But they are usually pulled out for the older grades a little bit during the day.

2. Do you have assistants in other grades?

Usually 2 or 3 teachers share an assistant in the younger grades. Older grades either have 1 to share among the grade level or none.

3. How much planning time to you get on average?

We get 40 minutes 3 times a week. One day we get none, the other day 90 minutes to plan as a group.

4. Do you have a duty free lunch?

Didn't last year (or any other year) but am supposed to this year. Yippee!

1. Do you have assistants in Kindergarten?

The 7 classes share one assistant.

2. Do you have assistants in other grades?

Yes, but the assistants have other duties too, so teachers only get them for about 20 minutes each day.

3. How much planning time to you get on average?

We get 40 minutes a day while the kids are at specials.

4. Do you have a duty free lunch?

Yes, about 25 minutes.

5. Do you get recess? How many?

We are required to have a 30 minute recess on days when our class does not go to PE. The primary grades have a 30 minute recess every day regardless, but we are responsible for planning it in our schedule and we monitor our own class.
