Clip to ScrapBook #1

Anyone do Shiloh with their third graders? I used to teach fourth grade and used this book whole class, but I haven't read it in such a long time. I started it as a read aloud the other day and boy is it hard to understand! Plus, there's the whole gun/drunk thing. Now I'm regretting it only a few pages in. They seem interested, but confused. What should I do? How do you back out of a book you started as a daily read aloud? Or is it better to continue it, but maybe cut some out? What are your thoughts?

Thanks!

I do read it in third grade. My friend reads them the entire series. I don't know your kids, but mine understand it well. They do enjoy it.

I used to read this series to my sixth graders. It has been awhile, but I think there is also some inappropriate language in the books.

I've read the series. I don't think I'd use it in 3rd grade. I think I would use it as a teaching moment. Talk about how sometimes you choose a book, and it's not a good fit. You could also discuss the difficulty of reading a specific dialect aloud. Pull out some other books, and let the class vote on what they'd like to hear. That way they won't feel too disappointed about your switching books.

I did do the voting. Great idea! Thanks!

They voted for Babe.

I'm glad it worked! I love the movie "Babe". Many of them probably have not seen it, as it has been out for quite awhile. Maybe they could earn a viewing, if you do some sort of behavior program.
