I'm a little confused in how the term "mentor text" is used with Common Core (as an example).
I thought a mentor text was used by the teacher to introduce a lesson or skill. However, I've been reading that some teachers use a "mentor text" as a whole class "read", meaning every child has a copy of the book.
In looking at Common Core, it seems the lessons are referencing a whole class read. What do you think? How do you use mentor text?

to me means a book for me. I teach a concept, as a mentor, to my students, the mentees, using the book.

But I guess if you have a copy for every child there is not problem putting the text in front of them.

I use a story from the reading basal as a mentor text for writing. So, it's very handy to have all the copies so they can examine it more closely.

Our school uses reading workshop/Daily 5. So, most of the students' reading is from self-selected books in their personal book bags. We use a few of the stories from the basal as a mentor text. So, after reading it, they can read and examine it more intensely. We pick and choose the stories we choose to read. Some aren't that great. But a lot of our mentor texts are not from the basal. For some of these, we have typed up the text for them to re-read.
