Daily 5 Book Boxes

I am starting D5 again this year. I did it once before, but my principal at the time did not support it. My new one does! I have the old version of the books and I read that they set up the boxes with 5-8 books including picture books, nonfiction, chapter, and magazines. I know at the beginning of the year I choose them to get started. After that, do you pick them or do the kids? How often do you switch them? I want it to be efficient and not take a lot of time. Thanks!

I do the shoe lesson and IPICK (train them to choose their own). I have "shopping" times like when they first come in in the morning, if they finish snack early, and once a week during library time. I also have them put in a poetry book.

I would allow them one round a week to book shop. I scheduled it so that there were only two at a time shopping.

Starting a new grade (1st) and new to Daily 5. I'm searching for the book boxes. Any suggestions? I'm trying not to spend my entire summer searching the internet or going to Target and Walmart! Any suggestions or help is appreciated!

I am going to buy the large totes from Oriental Trading. They are $11 for twelve of them. I don't have room for boxes. I can hang at least 4 on a hook and that will save space! I plan to put numbers on the totes that correspond with my students number.

D5, second edition, suggests students using one of their read to self periods as a shop for books period.

Our district uses "book bags" from this site instead of boxes (http://www.stepstoliteracy.com/pack-n-reads.html). Their pretty durable and they just go on the back of chairs instead of on a shelf.

I let my kids pick new books after they finish their morning work and they are also allowed to pick it new books during partner reading. My rule is that they can pick any book they like during morning work and partner reading since it's a "Look book time", but they can only store the books into their book bag if it is on their level.

During independent reading (similar to read to self...our district has them do this altogether), everyone has to read from their book bag and those books have to be on their level. Also, I give the students a large ziplock bag of books that we read recently during guided reading as a choice during independent reading.
