1. What is the first book you remember someone reading to you?

2. What is the first book you remember reading by yourself?

3. Do you recall any book that a teacher read to you in class?

My answers:

1. I remember my dad reading me And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street by Dr. Seuss when I was maybe 3 years old.

2. I clearly recall reading A Fly Went By by Michael McClintock in first grade...but I'm sure that wasn't my very first book. I just don't recall any particular book prior to that. Probably those darn Dick and Jane books!

3. My third grade teacher read Charlotte's Web by E.B. White to our class. I remember her expression and how she imitated the voices of the characters. Her name was Marvel Ide.

1. What is the first book you remember someone reading to you?

Grimm's Fairy Tales. Back in the days when people used to peddle books, encyclopedia sets, etc. door-to-door, my mother purchased a few volumes. I still have them.

2. What is the first book you remember reading by yourself?

I can't remember the VERY first book I read to myself, but I remember the first book I read to myself and became hooked on reading. It was Ramona Quimby, Age 8.

3. Do you recall any book that a teacher read to you in class?

Yes, many. My second grade teacher read the most wonderful books to us; Mrs. Piggle Wiggle, Charlotte's Web, The Wizard of Oz, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

1. Disney's Cinderella/ My Mom read this to me a few million times when I was little. I loved this book.

2. The Cat in the Hat/ I like the rhyme and the fun of reading this book. I was probably in first or second grade.

3. Mrs. Piggle Wiggle- My second grade teacher read this to our class. I read the entire series a little later when I was ready for them.

2. I can't recall exactly my very first book that I read on my own, but I clearly remember getting Are You There God, It's Me, Margaret? as a gift in about fifth grade and I was so excited to read it!

3. My 7th/8th grade social studies teacher read to us Man's Search for Meaning by Victor Frankl - a survivor of the Holocaust.

I am astounded at your memories. I have no clue. To me that seems the same as remembering the first time I was given a bottle or served a meal

1. We had a book called 365 Bedtime Stories. My mom read one each night. They were short stories. I know for sure that we had several of those books through the years. One story was about an Italian grandma trying to get the kids to eat spaghetti and she would say, "Eat, eat, my little bambino.

2. Silly Billy

3. My third grade teacher, Mrs. Sweet, read us The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins.

Mrs Sweet had been my grandma, mom, my sister and my teacher!

1. There are 2 books that I remember my mom reading to me. One was Silly Sidney. It was about an elephant who wished to be something else because he was not happy with his appearance. And The Smart Little Mouse which was about a cute gray squirrel, a bunny little bunny, and a smart little mouse who had to outsmrt a fox. Mom read them to me any time that I asked which was pretty often

2. Probably the 2 books mentioned above because I knew the stories verbatum. However, chapter books on my own were probably Nancy Drew books. I loved those mysteries.

3. The earliest story that I remember a teacher reading to me was a Pippi Longstocking book - 2nd grade.

1. What is the first book you remember someone reading to you? When I was about five maybe, my mom read the Little House on the Prairie books to my sister and me every night before bed.

2. What is the first book you remember reading by yourself? I don't remember the first book, but my second grade teacher introduced me to The Happy Hollisters series, a family with mystery-solving kids. I absolutely loved those books! I read them over and over. I even remember my favorite one.

3. Do you recall any book that a teacher read to you in class? My fifth grade teacher read a book about a girl named Susie. I don't remember the title at all, but I remember my whole class loved it so much that we would always beg her to read one more chapter.

1. What is the first book you remember someone reading to you?
Green Eggs and Ham

a basal reader starring Tom, his sisters Betty and Susan, his dog Flip and the girls' cat, Puff (?). It was very clear that the boy had the dog and the girls had to share the cat. Mother did a LOT of laundry and Father went out to an unnamed job where he had to wear a suit and tie.

3. Do you recall any book that a teacher read to you in class?
No. I can remember them reading aloud but I can't remember what they read.

The first books my mom read to us were those Little Golden Books you could buy at the supermarket. There was one called The Rainy Day Parade that I especially liked.

The first book I remember reading by myself was Dick and Jane. I also absolutely loved The Bobbsey Twins books.

I remember my sixth grade teacher reading us Misty of Chincoteague. I was fascinated with that book.

Heidi-I loved it!

4leaves, my favorite of the Happy Hollisters was one about a mystery centered on a fountain. I don't remember the details, but I read it so many times!
