DH isn't a materialistic guy. He doesn't have hobbies that require "stuff" or even has junk to go with it (tshirts, mugs, etc). He watches movies and reads books, but it's all digital. He's not much of a gadget guy and has more tools than he'll ever use. I get it. He's hard to shop for. Gift cards for books and movies and restaurants really are your best bet with him. My mom doesn't like to give gift cards. She wants to get him stuff. That's fine. He will appreciate it. But really. Why is she mad. Actually mad that I can't list off stuff he wants. I shop for him, too. I know it's not easy. But I'm not mad that he doesn't want more stuff to pile up. I buy him some new clothes, a gadget here and there, and give gift cards I know he will use and enjoy.

My grandmom always bought my dad for Christmas T-shirts. Maybe your mom could buy him t-shirts & socks. Those are always needed.

Yep! Tell her to get him socks and some tee shirts. And about your mom being mad, just ignore.

Would she settle for gifting him an experience instead of stuff? If she really feels the need she could buy him a shirt from the location and wrap it with a certificate for the experience.

Or she could buy for my dh. He wants lots of stuff. Expensive stuff. How he thinks he is going to retire in 2 years is seriously frightening me.

Depending on mom's budget ask for donate-able things. A heavy-duty jacket, knit hat, gloves, some nice warm socks, even protein bars. DH then can open the gift, ooh-and-aaah, and then put it in the car to give to the dude on the corner that he sees each day on the way to work. Mom never needs to know.
