I would first show them what imagery is and then encourage them to use that in their papers. They should be encouraged to use descriptive details so the reader can imagine how they feel, what they see, what they hear, etc.
I am probably not the best creator of elementary school/middle school prompts but maybe something like this:
"Imagine your first day of middle school. Describe the way you felt, what you saw, what you heard, etc." Make sure your story helps the reader imagine how you felt.
or
"Describe your feelings about going to middle school. What are your fears and concerns? What are you most excited about?" Be sure to use details so the reader can truly imagine how you feel.
