In primary grades (K-2), what do you consider the most important themes for science. I would like to supplement our curriculum. It has a lot on animals and defenses. I added living/non-living, animal classification and habitats. I just finished butterflies (insects). We have a butterfly growing in the room now. I am looking for something interactive or experiments that would be fun and memorable. I created a magnet unit with many experiments for this week. We have our vacation week but then do I want to do frogs, plants, solar system, states of matter?? Not sure...any suggestions.

Our science units were created using our state science standards which are based on the Next Generation Science Standards. Does your state follow the NGSS?

We have 5 units in first grade. Grades 2-5 have 6 units.

We are a private school using a specific curriculum, but I don't think it cover enough topics or provides enough information on the topics. Thank you for the list...it looks like the basic themes we had when I taught public school. I have never heard of Next Generation Science Standards...is that regional?

They are voluntary national standards. Many states have aligned their science standards with NGGS or are in the process of doing so. Textbook companies are getting into it also.

If you can choose what you want to do, I think states of matter is fun with lots of hands-on activities. Also, the kids loved our sound and light unit. You can find lots of experiments and activities on google and youtube.
