Now that summer is here and I have time for myself, I am looking for a professional book about teaching mathematics. I am a 4th grade teacher. Over the past several years students have come to me with little understanding of place value (therefore effecting their ability to +,-,x,/) and their basic fact fluency is dismal. I am also interested in math workshop as I understand that our administration wants us to run math class like Reader's Workshop. Do any of you have any suggestions for professional reading that would encompass these topics?

My favorite go-to math text is About Teaching Mathematics by Marilyn Burns. It has a very conversational style as she walks you through different lesson ideas and the rationale behind the approach. The text is group by strand but also has ideas for centers or what she refers to as the menu approach.

I really like al three of those books and have taken a variety of strategies and ideas form each - they are practical ideas easy to implement then next day.

Van de walle is another great resource. he gives lots of ideas on how students form their thinking and many activities to he. These can be easily used in math workshop.

I agree with Maryw. Hands down, Teaching Student-Centered Mathematics by Van de Walle. He makes you think of math in a different way--not procedurally, but conceptually.

I would suggest that you read Number Talks Helping Children Build Mental Math by Sherry Parish. It is available from Barnes and Noble. Unfortunately it costs $48. It gives many examples of short number talks to give your students the math vocabulary practice they need to become great mathematicians.
