I have been fighting with the insurance company for 6 months to get Gabriel observed or something to help me with his behavior to no avail. Had a video appointment with a psychiatrist today, she was over ten minutes late (thankfully I decided to send Gabriel to school until I knew more), then giving her his history, she said she could prescribe medication.
Since I wasn’t making any progress I asked everyone and anyone for help. I got a call last week from a nonprofit and a therapist is going to work with us weekly. We sit at the table, playing-play dough, Legos, Lincoln Logs, etc.. She will observe us via video and give me things to say (I will wear ear buds).
On top of that Gabriel has had 5 excellent days at school (knock on wood). He earned all his stickers! He had a slight incident today when told to get off a bike and almost hit a friend, but after being redirected by the teacher he apologized. Just hoping that somehow magically his behavior is back to being typical of a preschooler.

Basically all psychiatrists do is prescribe meds. Psychologists treat without meds. It’s a very distinct difference.

If you’re looking for help with his behavior that isn’t medication, I would look into a behavior psychologist.

Also, if you suspect ADHD, I would see a neurologist, not a psychiatrist. ADHD is a neurological issue, not a psychiatric issue.

I just happen to see this post. I was unsure what it was going to be about. This sounds like a great way of handling Gabriel.
My DD just informed me that her DD’s preschool teacher recommended play therapy. Long story but dealing with issues early should be valuable.

You deserve good news! I’m glad he’s been having a run of successful days at school. Hopefully he will continue to build on those successes and hopefully the sessions with the therapist will help too. That sounds really interesting.

Glad you'll be doing some therapy through Telehealth- what you describe is a great approach. It teaches you the skills and also provides valuable input about his behaviors. Sounds like PCIT in the format (or something similar).

I agree that psychiatrists typically work with medication. They are certainly trained to do therapy and evaluation and some do but that is much more rare, ime. The demand for medication is really high and it's a lot "easier" and more lucrative to do that (I've worked with several psychiatrists who feel this way).

Also, if you suspect ADHD, I would see a neurologist, not a psychiatrist.

I would say that licensed psychologists and/or neuropsychologists would be the way to go for ADHD eval. I agree that I wouldn't go to a psychiatrist for that purpose in the vast majority of cases.
