Does anyone have advice on how to teach students the difference between relevant and nonrelevant details in narrative writing?

I would prepare a narrative and sprinkle it with relevant and (obvious) non-relevant details. Use a think-aloud to get students to understand why you think the non-relevant details don't belong in your narrative. Revise it in front of your students.

I don't know what grade level you teach, but with my first graders I have to do this many times before they get it.
