Another one of those time requirements

So, just got a note that we have to have a 2 hour mandatory training. So, we can vote to give up our time (Wed afternoon early release which is our PLANNING time) or we can stay for 2 hours after school to do the training. What the hell kind of options is that? My time, or my time?

I am seriously annoyed.

Do you have a union to intervene? Our contract states the amount of meetings we can have and when we have them.

Otherwise, I guess you have to choose between giving up prep time or just giving up "free" time.

This is why I had to retire.

Iíd be ticked smooth off. If itís that important they can pay me the per diem to do it or they can find time during their time (SIP day) to do it. But, the way things are going, itíll come out if my time and theyíll expect me to smile and happily give up my time. I get why youíre mad.

I have already contacted our union rep to ask.

I also responded to the survey asking which we would like to do it in by saying I didn't think either one was fair. It should be done on one of those PD days before school started. Or one coming up.

Truthfully, it bugs me so much that I might get a stomach bug the day they do it. I know others will vote to do it during our planning time - the date which is right before our PT conferences. Yeah, that is when I want to do it.

After school started we were told that we have to complete 8 hours of online training on our own time. Why or why could this have not counted as one of our trade days we have to do in the summer. It would have made so much more since. Teachers get more and more piled on each year. It is a miracle that we have any time to teach at all.

Weekly Meetings

We are also required to come in once a week early for meetings. Most meetings are useless information and a waste of time. We have a union but they do little to help when issues come up.

Our union is super weak and this wouldn't fly in my district. They could make us do it, but they'd have to pay us. They also absolutely aren't allowed to schedule anything on work days. Do you think it would make a difference if a lot of teachers complain? I honestly think a lot of admins/district level people just try to get away with as much as teachers will let them. If the teachers just accept this, I'd bet it keeps happening.

Refuse to do it and encourage your peers to not do it.

. I have definitely been a squeaky wheel.

We are currently doing meetings for an hour 3 times a month, in addition to our "collaborative coaching" meetings that happen weekly so that admin can tell us in person things we either don't care about or could take care of via email.

We also had about 6 hours of online courses to complete on our own time.

We have some mandatory trainings that are web-based. They are usually too long to do in a prep.period, so we get stuck doing them at home. These were previously covered in faculty meetings. I feel your pain.

We had similar issues coming up where I am. There were meetings that were a colossal waste of time that added nothing to our ability to do our jobs and they started send us mandatory "Online training" that could be completed in our free time. People, collectively revolted. Then we added more language into the contract about what meetings could and couldn't be, and the requirement to do training during paid time that is provided for PD and not on our own time.

So you need to not just be the squeaky wheel you need other people to squeak along side you-if everyone else just takes it with a smile then it keeps happening and you look like you "aren't a team player".

of issue. There is a new program that we must learn. We were emailed tons of paper documents and videos on it. I started looking at all of the sh## and told myself just go home before you scream.
It would take 4 wkends to get through it all. ( We do not have enough prep time for all of the crap they give us.)
Then there was an OFFER for all of those who have questions to meet at a place an hour away from where I live to "train" people on the program at 6 pm on a week night. Are they freaking kidding?
If they required it, the union would scream. So instead, they make it so you either have to study it in your free time or spend an evening learning it from someone who knows how to do it. Then you are exhausted the next day. By 6 pm, I am exhausted and my brain is too full to learn anything new.
Teachers need to start screaming and refusing to do these types of things. The unions fought hard for teacher's rights where I live. I see so many teachers who buy into this system that it makes me glad I am going to be out of there sooner than later.
