Hello fellow first grade teachers!

I am so excited to have a teaching job this year and in such a fun grade! Since I
am starting a classroom from scratch, I was curious to know what are some must haves?

Thank you for your help!
Alex

It would be nice if you could look at your curriculum, what the school has. Some math programs have calendar stuff already. Don't purchase a lot until you see exactly what you've got. Much can be printed online...calendar pieces/months/days/numbers.
Here's one which I really like...(Look at her activity page, too.)

You don't have to use these in a pocket chart calendar, although they fit. You can draw a calendar on poster board.

A really good book is The Cornerstone for Teachers. It's big and worth it. Her site is huge, too.

I just retread Cornerstone as I downloaded it onto my Kindle app on my iPad. I've been teaching for many years and still love reading this book.

Make sure you know how you're gonna do everything. What will they do when they first come in? How will you transition? What will you do when you go to lunch? How will you say goodbye for the end of the day? What happens when someone doesn't follow the rules? Little guys love posters and other cues so maybe work on some fun little rhymes and signals to let them know we're moving on and maybe some rewards for doing a good job (maybe like a caught-ya)

Have fun!

Alex, be sure to check out all of the free stuff on TpT (Teachers Pay Teachers) there is a ton of stuff to help you set up your classroom! Good luck. I have taught K-1 for 10+ years, am now waiting to hear what grade I will have next year.
