Workstations

Last year, my campus fully implemented workstations and guided reading. How do you divide your kiddos up for workstations? How many workstations do you have at one time? What does your workstation chart look like that tells the students what workstation they are at? How much time do you alot per station?

Sorry for so many questions. Workstations are one of my weak areas and I want to make huge improvements for the new school year. Thanks for your help!

I don't implement there whole program but I use their 5 components as my rotations while I work with small groups. Read to Self, Read to a Buddy, Listen to Reading, Word Work and Work on Writing. This is much simpler to set up than Workstations. Each rotation is 20 min.

You can get more information by reading posts on the Daily 5 section of PT or by googleing Daily 5.

here on PT has tons of helpful information for Daily 5 .

I must use my basal reading series so I too use a variation of this program.

For Math work stations my kids work in pairs. At the beginning of the year I did mixed ability pairs and paid attention to who I thought could work well together. I changed the pairs about once every 4-6 weeks. By mid- year I tried to pair children with similar strengths and needs. That made differentiation easier and I could pull two pairs for a guided small group. I stilled changed pairs as needs changed or when certain pairs were. O longer working well together.

You should take a look at Debbie Diller's book Literacy Workstations.

My stations were the following: word work and writing (I made mini offices from JMeacham's website to place in the stations), stamps, listening station, white boards, magnets, and file folder games I made.
