Had a student run off on me today

Clip to ScrapBook #1

So today I was covering a sixth grade class for last period because the teacher had to go to a track meet. Before she left, she told me one of the boys needed to wait until all the buses were called and then I had to escort him down the office to sit with the principal. This was not a detention but for some reason he has to sit after school with the principal and do work. She also told me not to let him use the phone at all.

So at the end of the day, the kids are getting packed up. I tell this boy that he must wait until all the buses are called and then I will walk him down to the office. He starts telling me his mom said he needs to be home at 3:30. I stay firm and tell him that he is going to the office at 3:30. He starts asking to call his mom. I say he is not to use the phone at all.

This is when he darts out the door and runs down the hallway. I run out of the room and start yelling his name and telling him to get back to the room. He ignores me and continues to run to where they are loading the buses. I can't chase after him because there are still other kids in the classroom. Even if I could chase after him, it's not like I could tackle him or anything. So I go back into the room and call down to the office and tell them what just happened. The secretary says she will tell the principal.

I'm starting to wonder what I'm doing wrong. Just the other day a kid threw a cell phone at me. Now this other kid runs away. This is known as being a rough school...there have been a lot of people from the inner cities migrating to my small town because of the cheap housing. I actually went to this school but it wasn't even close to being this bad when I was there...of course we also didn't have the inner city kids. I only graduated high school in 2000 and it's amazing how much has changed since then.

I don't know...maybe I'm losing my touch as a substitute teacher.

any better I have a 6th grade class I sub pretty regularly. There is a young lady that has to sit detention EYERY time I am there. She has done the same thing you describe. I solved the problem by calling of of the support people and asking them to be at my door at 2:45 when the bell rings. Problem solved, and she gets a personal escort to detention. I am lucky the support ladies like me.

For a runner, calling the office and letting them know is really all you can do.

I just can't imagine. How does a sixth grader end up like this, I wonder?

Mind you, I filled in for a teacher today where the class consisted of the up and coming juvenile delinquents. I'm positive most of them had police records already, because a few were bragging about it. One young lady told me she was hit by her older brothers on a regular basis. (Yes, I passed this onto their regular teacher as well as the guidance counselor in charge of these reports.)
