Classroom rug???

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Hi all,

As I stated in another post, I am a new first grade teacher! The problem is, my room does not have a lot of stuff in it, so I'm kind of starting from scratch--which is good and bad! Anyways, the main thing here is, I need a classroom rug but if you look at the "classroom rugs" online, they are super expensive!! Does anyone have any ideas as to where I could get a rug a little bit cheaper that might work? Someone in my family suggested going to Menards or somewhere like that and trying to find an end of the roll because they'll give it to you cheaper. I know people on here always have good ideas...so I thought I would try my hand and ask! Thanks in advance for the help!

What is your budget? I find that ikea has cool rugs and you may be able to find them on sale right now. Also, check out if your area is a part of the freecycle web site (google: freecycle + your city/town. You maybe able to pick one up for free!

Thanks, I'll look into that. Not really sure about a budget, trying to get it as cheap as possible since it is coming out of my own money!

I'm fortunate to have some carpet in my classroom that I section off with painter's tape. I've also heard of people using placemats for children to sit on.

Have you considered those foam interlocking mats (the ones that kind of look like puzzle pieces)? I know you can find them on Amazon or at Sams Club. Those are usually washable and less expensive than some of the carpets that I've seen.

I would check craigslist, goodwill, and yard sales. I got my rug at a thrift store for $8 and it's adorable. Also, you could wait for the back to school dorm sales at places like Walmart. They will have great deals on dorm stuff like rugs. Good luck on the search!

Good Ideas!

Thanks again for all of the ideas! I actually found foam tiles online that interlock and I can get two sets for about $20 each, which is pretty good. I kind of decided against a rug only because in my district we have to vacuum it ourselves if it isn't the school's because of their policy. Plus, I thought that the foam tiles might clean up a little bit better.

Maybe you could write a Donor's Choose project. It only takes a little time and doesn't cost you anything. You might not have it for the beginning of school, but you would still need it when it arrived.

It got a great rug for my classroom from rugsusa.com. Everything is very affordable. The best parts are the free shipping and no tax! I just got my rug delivered this week and I can't wait to get it in my new classroom.
