How much do you tip a valet?

I'm headed to an appt today at a hospital with horrible parking. I'm not up to parking in a far away garage and walking across a busy street. They have valet parking, so I think I will try it. Technically it's free, I think, but how much should I tip?

I usually tip $3-$5. Theoretically thatís depending on service (how quickly they get the car, etc) but itís actually more dependent on what cash I have on me.

tip but usually it's at a hotel that we frequent. The valet has to run down the street, find it in the garage and then bring it back to us at the hotel. Usually we tip $5 but on really cold, snowy days we tip more.

Valet-$2

I will give a bit more if they need to run down the street, bad weather, etc.

I never do valet, but if I had to one day, how about giving the about $3 at the BEGINNING and say something like, "Thanks for taking good car of my car!" OR "Please take care of my car!" That way, it's to hopefully ensure a little bit that they'll be more careful and do a good job, etc.

(See, most people give tips AFTER the job's done, so the employee won't see the appreciation yet.)

I'd tip $3 in this case. I go up a little at hotels, etc. when bags are involved.

I give a $1 at drop off and $1 at pick-up. We are charged $7 for parking.

Ok, I don't travel much (at all). I've never used a valet. Ever. I just don't live in that type of area. I know if I used one at a restaurant or hotel, I'd probably tip.

But at the hospital? I don't think I would. I'd consider it part of the service of the hospital. I DO know that one of our hospitals offers valet services. And honestly, I can't think of a single other place near where I live that does.

Good think I'm reading what all of you would do. Now I'm prepared.

I'm cheap, so I avoid valet parking whenever possible. If it's a place that has no other option, I usually tip $2.

However, I agree with the pp on this one that I probably wouldn't tip at a hospital. I would almost bet they're not really allowed to take tips. I know at our airport, the people that drive the shuttles to/from parking lots aren't allowed to take tips. To me it seems like it would be kind of like that situation.

Omg. Iím 100% w MAsped. tip ahead for valet. I do usually tip again upon leaving. Although last time I was at the hospital I might not have tipped at all now that I think of it. Was having a test done and was VERY nervous ( and dehydrated as I couldnít eat or drink beforehand!!!!)

I like that idea of tipping at drop off and pick up. Five dollars would be the max that I would spend for the service.

All interesting ideas, thanks everyone! I decided to see if I could get lucky and could get a closer spot in the garage and I was successful. I did watch, though, and other people were tipping. This place has the worst parking for a hospital!

My hospital has valet. They shuttle you in golf carts. I donít tip valet. I do tip the shuttle drivers. Usually $2 but if they drive me all the way to my department instead of leaving me at the main entrance (itís a huge facility) I tip $5.
