interviews

Clip to ScrapBook #1

We have our interviews in a couple of weeks (for Progress reports). I teach grade 4. I'm finding that my kids this year have problems with comprehension, spelling, conventions, grammar and paragraph writing.

What can I tell parents to get their kids to do at home other than reading and monitoring their comprehension? I want parents to support their kids at home. Whether they do or don't, I won't ever know. But just want to have something to say to them so that when first term reports come out, they can't say I didn't give them any advice.

Thanks

Just pulling some ideas from thin air here...

If they have trouble with paragraph writing, could you maybe send home a list of topics for them to write about- one a day, and then after they've written 30 they can turn it in with parent signature for a prize? (Similar to the reading programs out there).

You could incorporate it with exercises to do with conventions - i.e. highlight all the punctuation in your paragraphs etc.

I'm just not into incentives. I was never 'rewarded' for doing work. Now, if kids do poorly, it must be the teachers fault.
