I like to get back to school bags and I'm 30-something! I would think some cool pencils, erasers, maybe a piece of candy or two and a notepad or a colored pen?

The students will love a welcome bag. I give pencils, bookmarks, small treat, and a poem. You can give other small items. I buy things from general dollar and Dollar Tree.

i make bags from wrapping paper that i laminate and use a die cut to make the bags. I put easter grass (10 cent pages) in the bottom and put in erasers, highlighters, pencils, bookmarks and even a small bag of fruit chews.

I don't think the idea is to 'kiddy' at all! It's all about WHAT you put in there!!!!! If you put things that are to 'baby-ish' in there then that's one thing....but if you put a a cool pencil or two, something related to a the theme(if your classroom and/or school has a theme), if you plan on doing some sort of reward system (i.e. a money system) maybe putting some starter bucks in there, etc. the kids will LOVE it!!!!!

Last year was my first year of teaching - it was in 4th grade. I love fourth graders. Here's what was in my bag for them with a post-it note explaining each item to them:

This bag has some reminders
of important ideas to help make
my fourth grade year the best one yet:

An eraser – it’s ok to make mistakes
Glue stick – as a class, we need to stick
together and stick up for one another
Gold pencil – I am an important
member of my class
Kaleidoscope – there are many different
ways to see a problem and find a
solution
Encouragement – notes of
encouragement from my
classmates & Mrs. Smith (I started their bags off with a note of encouragement from me)

My son is in the 7th grade and he just had a great time in sunday school when the teacher gave them some baseball cards, a pack of gum, and a roll of stickers. So yeah, I say go for it. They love getting stuff. The other teachers might roll their eyes, but you do what you want to do. Teachers that go the extra mile and get all hoky usually are the ones that have students wanting to be in their class for next year.
