I am looking for a replacement for the novel My Brother Sam is Dead, which I find to be too intense for my taste. It doesn't have to be related to American history. Just a great book - maybe something a bit more uplifting?

I'm always looking for good books so I'm going to be following this. Here are a couple:
Sahara Special: on the surface, the summary of the book is intense but it's not dealt with in a depressing way and when I've read it to kids they really seem to like it but don't oftne choose it on thier own.
Timmy Failure and The Tapper Twins Go To War (with each other) are fun.
Escape From Mr. Lemoncello's Library is a good mystery. Oh and I like The Westing Game too.
I'm sure I'll think of some more!

There are many great lessons in this book. Students will relate to the characters. You and your class will love this book.
