I've been seeing a lot of posts about school safety. I don't know if anyone has posted this, but this is what we're doing in our school. One of our teachers saw this idea on the Internet. Our principal got some old fire hose from the fire department and had it cut into sections, about 8 inches long. Every classroom in the school was given a section. In the event of a shooter, you slide your section of hose over the metal arm that holds the door open. When that is in place, no one can get the door open from the outside, even if he were to shoot through the window and unlock the door. It wouldn't work well if you have a big window in your door, but it works in ours because we have those long skinny windows that no one could climb through. My DH also wants me to keep a can of wasp spray in my room so I could shoot someone in the eyes from 20 feet away.
I don't think I could carry a gun, but I think I could do some damage with wasp spray and a baseball bat.

I have both wasp spray and a bat in my room. I heard about putting a belt around the door mech but haven't tried it. It was on my list of things to do for a while.

I can't see how you would slide the hose onto the door mech. It doesn't seem like it would even fit. Plus short people like me would have to drag a chair around there to do it. . I will have to look at it closer tomorrow. I just don't think it is skinny enough to do easily.

Duh. Fire hose. No wonder I don't get it. . I was thinking garden hose. I could change my post so I don't look so dumb, but I will admit it.

but I found this invention that was inspired by the same idea. Hope it's helpful. You just slide the fire hose over the closer arm just the same way that they slide this metal gadget.
