I am recommending retention for one of my students. I am drafting comments today. Can anyone help me craft some good wording? Thank you.

If the retention process hasn’t been initiated/completed, I would put nothing on report card. I.e.....child isn’t going to be retained, so there’s no point in saying “recommend retention” as it’s not going to happen. And the potential failing grades will support lack of progress.

If it’s official that child will be retained, I’m still not sure I would write anything in reference to it. Anyone reading child’s CUM will see two report cards for same grade.

I would put
“I am recommending retention for the 2019-2020 school year.”
Or
“Parents request child’s name placed in X grade. Teacher recommended retention.”
Short comments and to the point

Surely this has already been brought up to the parent? Our principal has to submit names to the area superintendent of any child being considered for retention. The child must be in tier 3 and still struggling for it even to be considered. If it does happen, who just check a box on the report card.

As the previous poster said, if it's not happening, don't say anything. If you must put something, just say "student is recommended for retention".

met with parent, discussed, easy. We had discussed my recommendation to retain several times along the way and she had approached the superintendent with her plan to object. Principal and I met with mom, she acknowledged I needed to report my recommendation, and principal gave mom paper to sign she disagreed. Student has been absent one-third of year and reading is a great concern.

The student will go to the next grade, per parent request, and my recommendation for retention is noted in a permanent record. Thanks for your insights.
