No lockers, just hooks

Clip to ScrapBook #1

My classroom doesnít have lockers or cubbies, and thatís ok. I have seat sacks for them to keep their belongings.

For their backpacks and coats they have hooks on a wall. I am thinking of not labeling the hooks and just letting them hang their backpacks where they want. I only have 14 students and lots of extra hooks.

Itís my first year teaching K, so do you think this is ok? They will have their names at their tables and on their seat sacks. TIA!

I would label them. I had this set up in kindergarten, and it felt like it helped to have them labeled.

I have hooks and they are labelled, however this is because my kiddos line up next to their bags each morning to come into class. They also keep lunch, fruito & drink bottles in their bags so they need to access them frequently. I don't think you need to have labels if its not helpful for your management strategy.

I would label them because kindergartners love both structure and their names

We have two shelves with hooks underneath-one shelf on opposite walls. It is hard to describe but there are two rows of hooks hang underneath the shelf. I attached a photo. Keep in mind that my school was built in the 50s and backpacks were not as big as they are today.

Students pull out lunch boxes from their backpacks and set them on the shelf. I have no assigned hooks. The rule is the back row of hooks on each shelf gets filled first and then the front row. It is too hard to try to push through backpacks to get to an empty back hook. I hate winter because they also have to keep coats in their backpacks to avoid lice. I only have total of 20 hooks, but have had 25 students so we double up using the front row of hooks.

As you can see in the photo, I use all available space in my classroom. I have shelves on wheels for recess activities stored underneath the one shelf/hooks. I store containers with different building materials (Legos, Duplos, Bristle Blocks, Tinker Toys...)underneath the other one. My students also have cubbies to store their change of clothing (when they have accidents), sneakers, art shirt.

I am moving into a smaller classroom. I won't have my coatroom. The room I am moving into didn't have any hooks so they took the shelves/hooks from my old room and put them on the wall in my new room. (My old classroom is being renovated for a new preschool class and they didn't need it.)

I like the idea of having them line up next to their hook to go places. I could do boy girl boy girl.

I also have hooks that I label. Many of the kids will have matching backpacks, so labeling helps reduce confusion and arguments.

I agree with PoohBear. And, especially in the beginning of the year, they NEED it.

Labels it is!

Iíll be asking a lot of questions, Iím sure! I e met 3 of my students so far. The boys today greeted us by acting like a dinosaur and playfully attacked my DH! It will be his first formal school experience.

I am starting to see why K teachers are so excited by all the growth their kids make. Iíve seen where they end up by the beginning of first, but now I get to see where they are at the beginning of K. Itís going to be quite a ride. Canít wait!

Another advantage of labeling the hooks is that you can skip a hook here and there if a student has a huge backpack to give the a little more space.

14 students is a good number-you can pair them for activities and you have enough students that you do activities with small groups.

Guess I'm the lone wolf on this one - I've never labeled my hooks. Might help me with whose backpack is whose, though. Hmmm....

Yes! We're halfway through the year this year and I have 14. It's perfect! (Especially compared to my 29 kinders last year )

Can your custodian put up the hooks you need next to the ones that are already there? Or put up a piece of wood in another spot for the extra hooks?

If not, maybe those heavy duty command hooks will work for you. Iím sorry you are starting the year like that!
