Overrated TV Shows

DH and I are looking for a new series to watch. We watch one show at a time on Netflix, Hulu, or Prime. (We donít have cable or antenna.) Even though we only watch from one to three hours a few nights a week, we have covered a lot of shows.

Whenever we are out of shows on our watch list, Iíll ask for suggestions or browse for popular series on the web. We have tried a few that we just didnít get the hype over. Here are some that really underwhelmed us.
  • Sons of Anarchy
  • The Walking Dead
  • The Office

People were so excited about those shows and told us we would love them. Not so much.

What was underwhelming for you?

I agree with The Walking Dead. I havenít seen Sons of Anarchy. I did end up loving The Office, but I had to try it a couple of times before I stuck with it. I didnít get it at first.

My husband and I really enjoy several of the British shows on the three streaming services you mentioned. Broadchurch, Happy Valley, and Last Tango in Halifax on Netflix are wonderful, IMO. Iím not sure what type of series you like. Broadchurch and Happy Valley are detective shows, and Last Tango is a family drama. I highly recommend all three.

I don't get the love for Workin' Moms. As a working mom, I cannot relate at all. Plus the characters are awful!

I'm surprised you were underwhelmed with The Office. It is one of my favorite TV shows. I was disappointed in these shows:

Game of Thrones
Orange is the New Black
all of the CSI series

I read too quickly and thought you were looking for recommendations. As far as shows that were underwhelming, the only one you listed that I saw was The Office, which was just ok. If I donít like the first couple of episodes, I tend to stop watching. I tried House of Cards, The Americans, Ozark, and Transparent, but didnít enjoy them enough to continue watching.

It isn't for everyone. You must have a certain type of humor to enjoy it. It is silly, but DH and I got a lot of surprises and chuckles when watching The Good Place on Netflix.

I am watching TURN now on Netflix. It is a historical fiction, that has a some real history in it. It has a few scenes where th show describes Washington's army march through NJ. I don't live far from those areas and very close to Washington's Crossing.

Off topic-if anyone is in the area of Washington's Crossing in NJ, do take the time to cross over the bridge and take the guided tour and hear the history of that historic event. If you would like to visit during the time of year the crossing took place, prepare for a huge crowd! There will be a lot of people dressed in accurate period costumes who will be selected to cross the Delaware.

Outlander. I liked the first couple of episodes, so I kept watching, but by the second season I was over it. Someone's getting raped or captured by the British in literally every episode.

I just can’t get into 90% of the series playing on any network, but these spring to mind as not liked:

The Office
Seinfeld
Orange is the New Black (I watched a few episodes, then got bored)
Masters of Sex
Peaky Blinders

I think my problem is I can’t sit that long to sustain my interest. DH says I have commitment issues. He might be right. Currently, the only shows I really watch faithfully:
Game of Thrones (well, not any more...it’s over)
Outlander ( and it’s reaching the boring storyline in the books)
Doctor Who (and jury is still out on Jodie as the doctor)
Poldark
The Deuce

I could not get into Outlander. A few years ago, I read the first book. Meh. And I'm a history nerd! Well, I thought I'd try the series and watched the first 2 episodes. Still meh.

I also could not get into Stranger Things. Again, weird because I love sci-fi. But it was a little too stressful for me. I might try it again, though.

I have never watched Orange is the New Black and have zero interest in it.

disappointing tv

My current disappointment is This is Us.....started out great and then the characters turned into the most self righteous, self centered group I've ever watched

I'm also one of the few people who didn't like Downton Abbey (and I love most British historical shows)

I haven't watched many of the shows that are popular now, mostly because I'm always disappointed. I like a good story with true emotions, without crude humor or scary stuff.

I've tried to get into The Office. It's okay every now and then, especially if you just need something quick while you're eating dinner, but I'm not a huge fan. I can see how it is funny every now and then, but there just doesn't seem to be much meat or a storyline there.

The main character in Turn is based on an ancestor of mine...Jesse Coles. He had a daughter named Pheobe who married into the Van Gelder family. My grandmother was a Van Gelder from Brooklyn.

I enjoyed the show tremendously. Love American history.

Adding to my previous list...
I watched one season of Downton Abbey, after that I got bored. Not enough Maggie Smith for me. Plus I was more interested in what was going on downstairs than upstairs.

I made it longer than you did, but this was a show I loved at first and totally lost interest over time. I don't like that they were always killing off main characters and the story got less interesting over time.

I tried Shameless, which people rave about, and totally hated it.

I will say I love The Office, but it does appeal to a certain sense of humor that's not for everyone, IMO. My mom always hated it because she couldn't stand the second hand awkwardness of watching Michael .

I couldn't get into The Walking Dead at all, or Breaking Bad (liked it for a while, but then...).

I did not like Friends when it came out, but enjoyed it years later. Same with Grey's Anatomy, although I loved it at first but then it just got to be... meh.

I know so many people that love Poldark. I didn't like the books and don't like the show. But I watch it because my dh likes it and he watches Outlander with me.

I do like The Office, though! It is definitely not everyone's sense of humor, but I love it. Same with Parks & Rec.

We did just start watching The Man in the High Castle on Amazon. It's about what the US would be like if Germany and Japan had won the war. We're only a few episodes in but it seems like it will be good!
