One more step...

I posted a couple months ago that I've decided to retire at the end of this school year. I received many encouraging messages.

I am one more step toward that. During my pre-observation conference today, I informed my principal (a newly minted principal - I swear she must have been born long after I started teaching ) that this would be my last year, but requested she keep it confidential until such time I let the district office know.

WHEW!!! Now that someone outside of the family knows, I feel like a FREE person! Oh My Gosh!! I had a total smile on my face the rest of the day! The kids must have thought I was loony!

better and better! If you don't want to keep a lot of your 'stuff'--start giving it away as you finish using it! If you plan on keeping it, start packing it as you get done using it and take it home--then you can just walk out the last day with little or nothing! You will LOVE retirement!

Yay! I'm sure you feel great!

Our new principal was a student of mine years ago! He's a great principal, but I jokingly told him that now that they are letting children run the school, it was time for me to retire. (I had already announced my retirement before they hired him...and the elementary principal next door, who also was a student of mine. )

Welcome to the board!

You can now relax and teach just the way you like for the rest of the year. My mantra was, "What can they do now? Fire me?" I skipped all the PD meetings about a new evaluation system and all the meetings about new tests and any meeting about next year. I "un-nested" from my classroom, saving only those things that I thought a new teacher would want and use.

Retirement is great!

Congratulations! As I am doing a few things around the house, I was saying to myself how happy I am being retired! It's better than you can imagine!

I know how taking that one big step really makes it REAL! Congrats and enjoy....that smile lasts and lasts. It's sort of like the cat that swallowed the canary....and nobody else knows....it will be hard to keep the secret though. I had one wise old teacher who swore she knew I was going to retire months before I actually announced it. She said I had a different attitude and she knew something was up.

Congrats! Just making the decision is a stress reliever. If you think you're free now, just wait until your first day of retirement!

Someone mentioned that you start packing it away or giving your belongings away. Great Idea. Don't stress with the packing but try to do a little bit each time so that you wont feel stressed later on during the year. So thrilled that you are going to join us very soon.

Yay! Congrats to you! I agree 100% with Turkeyrun. Start taking stuff home or giving away. Now that's liberating! On the last day you can just skip out the door!
