Snowball effect!

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I'm teaching chemistry to a couple of home-schooled kids from my church this year. I'm also tutoring a girl from the local high school who is taking AP Chemistry and struggling a bit.

Tonight I got an email from another girl who goes to my church and attends the local high school. She wants to take AP Bio next year (it is only offered alternate years in our small school), but she needs chemistry first. She's wondering if I could teach a chemistry class to her (and some of her friends!) over the summer.

Of course, it really depends what the school will accept...so I sent her to her guidance counselor and the ELO coordinator to do her due diligence.

But it looks as if I'm not going to be lacking for kids to teach if I want to do it!

The young lady got back to me today. Her counselor suggested she take the course on line, but she would still like to meet with me twice a week for extra help so she can complete the course over the summer...and she has friends who will probably join her...so, looks like I'm teaching quite a bit this summer (we got the grant for the field ecology course plus a junior high program as well). Busy, busy!

Is it the one where you put water in a small dish and put pepper in it. Then secretly dip your finger in dishsoap and stick your finger in the center of the dish to see the pepper scatter to the edge of the dish? Then claim you have magical powers and it is your chi.

I have many, many of them! Some can really only be done if you have access to a few simple chemicals, like the one where you pour "water" into a wine glass and it turns the color of rose wine...(Danger! Danger! Don't actually drink it! The "water" is an alkaline solution and the wine glass has a little phenolphthalein acid-base indicator in it. Phenolphthalein is an excellent laxative). Here's a more elaborate version:

There's the genie in the bottle...You have a lovely, interesting, opaque bottle (decorate it up with jewels and such). Lift off the stopper, and "smoke" (actually steam) spews out of the mouth of the bottle. The bottle contains 30% hydrogen peroxide. A teabag filled with manganese dioxide is hanging inside the bottle above the contents, secured by its string against the stopper. When you pull the stopper, the teabag falls into the peroxide, which catalyzes the decomposition of the peroxide to water and oxygen. The reaction is pretty exothermic, so lots of steam comes out. It's pretty spectacular.

There are lots of "invisible ink" tricks...

And elephant toothpaste! Can't forget that! Put hydrogen peroxide and dish detergent in a large cylinder. Pour in a little potassium iodide solution, and a foamy mess comes spewing out of the cylinder.

Have fun!
