What is the latest you ever got out?

I am shocked year after year to see so many people getting out on the 22nd and 23rd for the Christmas holidays! The latest we ever got out in my 31 years of teaching was a few times on December 21, and each time that happened the kids got out on the 20th and we had a duty day on the 21st. What is the latest you were ever dismissed for the holidays, if you remember?

Holiday break

...always began on the 24th. We worked until the 23rd and that remains the schedule here other than private schools. Because of unexpected snow days, most vacations just get shorter in the northeast!

My school was year-round and in December we had three weeks off. Vacation started a week before Christmas and ended the second week of January. This was ideal because many of the students were of Mexican descent and would go to Mexico for the holidays to visit family down there.

Many times.

December 23. Not uncommon. And we always go back on January 2.

I have a dim memory of going to school Christmas eve as a kid...but maybe I'm imagining that!

We always got out the Friday before the week Christmas fell. If Christmas fell on the Sunday following Friday, we got out two Fridays before. I don't remember the latest we ever got out but we never worked as late as the 23rd. Maybe the 21st.

My DSIL/DN teach in NJ and they get out just a couple days before Christmas in their district.

We could take the 24th off as an unpaid holiday with no repercussions. We got Christmas Day off and went back to work on the 26th. After I left the new principal went to bat for the teachers and demanded that the facility #1-pay them a living wage, the same as the district where the facility was located and #2, follow that district's school calendar. Teachers are now salaried, not paid hourly.

The 23rd, after a regular day of teaching. There were a few times when I was traveling home AND doing my Christmas shopping for seven or eight people ON Christmas Eve! I was young then and could handle it.

It depended on what day of the week it fell. I don't think I ever had to work on the 23rd if it fell on a Monday or Tuesday.

As a student in Rhode Island, we usually went a full day on the 23rd and returned the day after New Years. But we had a week off in February.

In Ohio I could always count on 2 weeks at Christmas. However, there's no February break here.

The district I taught in and the one my boys went to both have a half day on Dec. 23rd. That's the way it's been for as long as I can remember.

I worked at a parochial school. The latest I got out of school was a half day on Dec. 22. We would have a Faculty Christmas Luncheon afterwards. In the last couple of years, the Faculty Christmas Luncheon has been switched to Dec. 6 which is St. Nicholas Day. The fun part was the "Dig It or Dump It" gift activity where gifts were exchanged/traded/"stolen".

My anniversary is Dec. 19, because when I got married we got out on Dec. 18. In recent years, it has been moved closer to Christmas. I think the latest was Dec. 23 for half day. Wow! The last couple of years, the principal made us stay until the last bus had returned, in case there were any children who did not make it home.

Hmmm, some days I taught on Xmas as it was not celebrated in the country I lived in. In countries that did celebrate I'd say ummmm the 18th.

is getting out on the 23. Last winter they missed lots of school because of snow and teacher's in-services. I assume they need to log in days where ever they can. I am so glad to be able to shop and decorate and bake when the mood strikes me. I always disliked Christmas when I worked because of the stress. I have to say it is quite nice.

Christmas vacation

For us, it was always two weeks, and the latest start day was December 21. Usually, we started vacation between December 16-18, depending on the calendar, and always on a Friday. My last two years we had three weeks instead of two but then got out later in June.

Our Schedule

Our last day is December 23rd. We always work right up until Christmas Eve. It is a pain in the neck for teachers, parents, and students to get ready for the holidays with school going so late.
