I had oral surgery last week. The first 2 days were fine. Some pain, but nothing unexpected and it was well-controlled with ibuprofen/tylenol that the dr recommended.
The past few days have been horrible pain-wise. I've been taking the ibuprofen more often than recommended and I'm still in a lot of pain. It is throbbing. It sometimes gets better for a few hours, but then always comes back with a vengeance. I've also applied heat, because I read that cold only is good for the first 48 hours. My gums are pretty swollen, but I think that's normal.
It is possible you have a dry socket, especially since the pain has increased. Otherwise, you may have an infection. You really do need to go back to see your professional.
I do have his cell phone number because he called me on it the day of surgery to check up on me. I think he said I could use it. But my memory of that day is shady from the drugs. Not sure if I should text him now or wait till morning.
PEPteach, I would highly recommend getting in touch with the dentist now. He may be able to see you, send you to an emergency dentist today, or send in a prescription. There's no reason to be miserable from now until morning.
I second contacting the doctor tonight. Otherwise, call his office and they’ll probably have an emergency number or an answering service. You should not be in that much pain a week out from surgery.
I'm so sorry you are in pain. I also think you should go ahead and call. He may be able to suggest something for the pain for now before he sees you.
Meanwhile, gargle with salt water and keep your hands off the facial area where the pain is located. Aggravating it by massaging it makes it worse and the infection could travel down towards your lymph nodes.
Haven't heard back yet. I hope I know tonight whether or not I need a sub in the morning. Not something that's easy to arrange once the school day has already started.
I hope you have called for a sub by now. They will probably be able to work you in at some point tomorrow since you are in so much pain! In that kind of pain you need to call a sub anyway. I hope you get relief soon!
Ugh...he called back. He said he'd be happy to see me tomorrow if I'd like to come in, but he said the surgery does cause a lot of pain and it gets worse before it gets better. I don't feel like the intensity of the pain was emphasized before surgery.
Please go in to see him. He is responsible for your comfort. You shouldn’t have to deal with this pain for days.. until it just gets better. Not okay or fair . Hugs!
