Hello! My name is Lia and my grade sevens and eights are wanting a new look for our classroom. I was wondering if anyone could have any cool ideas that grade sevens and eights would be interested in? Any idea will help.

Thank you

Bee Theme

Clip to ScrapBook #3

I am a 5th grade teacher and I used the bee theme last year. It is very easy to find bee clip art, note pads, borders, etc.... One bulletin board said "BEE" a leader with bees all around it and bee hives with leadership qualities on it. I created a poster that said we are "BUSY BEES". I printed out the class rules, rewards, and glued bees on them. I have many more things I used. If you decide to go with the "bee" theme, I would be glad to post them all. Good luck!

Have you thought about asking your students how they would like it decorated? Being the age that they are they will not want anything childish, but at the same time still like themes (they just won't easily admit it). Try to get their input so they will be as enthusiastic as you are decorating.

Some examples I thought of;

NASCAR

Sports (pick a specific team locally or several different teams) these could be college or professionally. They may want to use the school mascot

USA (red, white, and blue)

History room example of this is: History of flight (then and now pictures)This could also include kites and hot air balloons

Movie Theme Go to the video store or theater and ask for movie posters

room decor

I would go with a teen feel. Black background paper on your bulletin boards. Then add tie-dye borders & letters. There are some other multicolor borders & letters out there also that aren't tie-dye. How about a lava lamp or another "cool" lamp. Target has lots of lamps. Do you have room for some bean bag chairs or cheap plastic lawn chairs? They can write on the lawn chairs with Sharpies or paint markers. You can add tie-dye pillows or shape pillows. The free Cd's that you can get from AOL, etc can be used for labels. Write on them with Sharpie markers & stick them up. Maybe you have a closet or another area where you could hang a beaded curtain. Ask the kids if they have anything to donate to the room to cut costs. Check out thrift stores, etc. Even old wooden chairs or tables painted bright colors add new life to a room. Have fun!

If you don't have an idea yet, what about sports? You can do so many things with that, and most kids that age like some kind of sports. Even dance, cheerleading, etc... can be added in there. Put colorful pendants on the wall, etc...

Jungle Theme
Old 10-26-2005, 08:05 PM

Clip to ScrapBook #10

I teach 5th grade, and I decorated my classroom with a jungle theme. I think this could be very appropriate for seventh and eighth grades. It is also very easy to find decorations...drape vines from the ceilings and around bulletin boards, leopard print pillows, wild animals for decoration, etc. I have even made palm trees, and my dad built a reading hut using bamboo poles. My students think it is so cool!

animal print

Why not use animal print? Your room theme could be "Wild about (whatever you teach)!" Use black background paper and any of several of the animal print borders available now. Large "WILD" animals could be used at different places or even the "wild" animals that are already in your room! (students) There are animal print throws, pillows, lamps, chairs (how about camouflage folding chairs for a reading area) available.

I have done a jungle/ animal print room for a junior high classroom and they seemed to really enjoy it. I had bamboo stapled to one wall with a net that looked like a canopy and made a big tree in one corner with a tiger (our mascot) sitting on a limb. The first year after the show Survivor came out, I added a survivor theme and they really enjoyed it. Once I had the idea I was able to have tribal councils, immunity (homework passes) competitions, reward challenges, etc. I don't know if this helps!

As a 4th grade teacher. I used the NASCAR theme. There is so much stuff on Nascar these days. We called ourselves the Racers and all prizes were trophy cut-outs. Our reading area was the PIT; our door said READY, SET, THINK!

I made a "Harley Davidson" room one year! The kids thought it was so cool (So did several parents!) I put yellow tape outside my room in rows like a parking lot. A Parking for Readers Only sign beside it. The hallway walls were black and orange (cheap plastic table cloths) with chrome (aluminum cookie sheets). On the door, I made the "Harley" symbol that said I can HARLEY wait for school! I went to local dealers and was given boxes and bags to decorate with and even key chains and bumper stickers for the students! It was a hit!! Hope this helps.

5th Grade Jungle Theme
Old 08-24-2009, 08:05 PM

Clip to ScrapBook #26

I love your ideas for the Jungle theme. I just found out today that I am going to be teaching 5th grade Enlish/Language Arts. This is a new position due to our school growing so fast. And school just started this week! I have a blank slate to work with and am planning on doing the Jungle Theme. Just wondered if you had anything else to add that you have done in your room? Pict.'s etc? I am so excited, this is my first year to teach! So any additional ideas would be great! Thanks!!

Outer Space
Old 08-24-2009, 08:31 PM

Clip to ScrapBook #27

I have an Outer Space theme this year. There is so much you can do with it. If you put black paper on all of your bulletin boards, you can use the golwo in the dark stars or white twinkling lights. It looks really cool. You can make this theme as cutesy or grown up as you want. Your Math board could have the caption "Houston, We have a problem.". My helper board has the planets in their orbit around the sun. Each planet has a different job on it, and the helpers names are on spaceships. I've also seen the helpers names on astronauts. You can have the kids make papier mache planets to hang up in the room. Your coooperative groups could be named for the planets. There is so much you can do with it.
I hope you find some ideas that will work for you.

Are you teaching 7th and 8th graders or 7 and 8 year olds?
This would make a major difference.
