Food/Diner/50's...any pictures/ideas

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I have gotten a lot of good ideas for helping to make my classroom look like the 50's. However, I'm having a hard time visualizing what I could make it look like. Also, I'm having trouble figuring out how to make it work for things like the writing corner, the library, classroom helpers, etc. I don't think it will be a problem decorating but making it tie into school and bulletin boards sayings seems more difficult.

Any ideas or further suggestions would be appreciated.

here are some things I thought of....

Think 1955 the start of the rock and roll era....some party stores sell cardboard cut outs of people from the 50's (marilyn monroe, elvis presly, chuck berry), and they sell smaller cutouts that have records, record garland, music notes, soda shop looking stuff, and a sock hop couple. If you have a party store in your area that's a great place to start.

Also, at stumps.com, I used to get ideas for my room, I know they used to have a 1950's theme (it's a prom theme, but I'm sure you could draw ideas from it), and they even had a convertible cutout that had a chair set up behind it, so it looked like the people were sitting in the car. I was thinking something like that, if you draw well, or know someone who does, would be cute for Open House, and your students, and their parents could take pictures in it.

Also, as far as BBd's, I was thinking maybe a BBd that says "Mrs/or Ms _____________ 's Diner" - maybe this could be an area where you post announcements.

Another BBd could be "Here's what's on the Menu today" as your daily schedule

your student achievement board could be a sock hop couple, and maybe some records around it, that read "Tune in" and I have seen teacher stores that sell small plastic looking records, (also party stores) and maybe the students names could be placed on the records)

Another kit I have seen is called "Tune in" and it has a very large jukebox (about 3 feet tall), and has about 30 Cd cutouts that come with it, to put names on. Or you could have Tune into Math, (tune into Reading), etc....and have books listed, or math facts, of course you would want to laminate the cds if you are going to make it an interactive board, so that way you could write and wipe off.

Maybe you could have "Mrs. _______'s top 40" (or whatever number you wanted and that could be your word wall),

Let me know if you need more ideas. And, you can always pm me, I hang around here often.

Thanks so much from both of you. These are great ideas! I love them and will definitely use them. I wish that I could find a silhouette of a boy/girl together like at the hop or something.
Thanks again...

"Sock Hop Helpers"- Put names on socks/jobs on music note or saddle oxford/penny loafer.

Page down on this board to "Music Theme for Third Grade." Someone posted a website for Beth Newingham's website. There is a keyboard on the wall and students holding guitars. This might work for your 50's theme.
