On my website, under documents, Teacher Resources, are two of my favorite MLK lessons....The Shape Story Lesson and using brown eggs/white eggs, determining that they are different on the outside, but the same inside (just like people).

Not a whole lesson, but... my kids love this song in a pocket chart. Instead of "you" and "me" I put in names of students. It is to the tune Of He's Got The Whole World In His Hands

Dr. Martin Luther King had a dream (Sing three times)
He had the whole world in his dream.

He had me and you, in his dream
He had me and you, in his dream
He had me and you, in his dream
He had the whole world in his dream.

I like to use the egg lesson with my kids since it is a good visual. One year I was doing it, explaining the whole we are the same on the inside. I cracked the white egg and showed the kids. After they took guessing about the inside of the brown egg, I cracked it open and the darn thing was green and rotten.I was so shocked at first I just sat there. Luckily I had more eggs and we cracked another one open and it was fine. The lesson? Always have extra white and brown eggs on hand just in case!

I love to do the TLC art project where you create a Martin Luther King, Jr. picture. It is in the winter book. I'm also teaching the World is A Rainbow by Greg and Steve, Volume 2 , A Man Named King, also by them on the Holidays and Special Days CD and Love Can Build A Bridge by the Judds.

I did the egg lesson too and one year it was a double yolk egg. So luckily, I too had brought extra eggs and it was fine.

I make homemade playdoh and call it "Snowdoh" . We play with it in centers before this lesson. I also make a little of the doh that is brown, black, red, yellow, and orange. The food coloring paste is the best, it gives a very vivid color. Then, we talk about how people are the same inside-same heart, blood, etc...That our outside doesn't make us better than anyone else. Our outsides make us more interesting-the world more interesting, etc... Then, the kids try to add the other colors to their "snow-doh" that I give them from the batch we played with to match their own skin. We talk about how we need all those colors to make our different skin colors in our classroom, etc... The kids love this.
