Any ideas or resources for sending home fluency practice for 5th graders? Thanks!

the great poetry race

I haven't tried this, but I plan on doing the great poetry race. You can google or just search here.
Give the students a copy of a poem on Monday. They take it home and read it to as many adults as they can and have those adults sign their sheet. Students bring the poems back on Friday. Whoever has the most signatures wins the race, but in reality they all win because they are developing fluency.

Not sure if this is what you are looking for but hope it helps.

Poetry Race--unfair

The Great Poetry Race--at least the way you've described it here--seems like it would pin some kids at an unfair advantage or disadvantage. Like, kids who live in a single-parent household vs those with mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, and aunt/uncle in the same house. JMO.

If they read the poem more than once to the same person, I would have that person sign again so that there is no unfair advantage.

Do your students have access to the internet?

This could be optional. I have my students go to speeder.com. I email them new stories each week. They put in our target wpm rate and chunk it in 3 or 4 words. Not all my students have internet and we can only send home nightly reading and math homework, so this is an optional assignment.

I was interested in this site, but ended up at one with a webcam on a ferret. Is there more to the address?

I loaded a Halloween Poem in the speeder.com. How do I get the students to access it? I put a friend name in ("_________" class) and it would not allow it because there is not a friend by that name. Do I have to register my class so they can be a friend?

spreeder.com

It is a combination of speed and reader. I'm so sorry!
