Summer 'teacher book' reading

haven't been on here in a while, so I may missed this...but my question is...

What 'teacher book' are you reading this summer? I will be teaching ELA and Writing to 4th and 5th graders next year.

Looking forward to it, and would like to add some new ideas.

Book titles welcome!

TIA

Loved, "Notice and Note." Great job of implementing signposts to delve deeper into close reading. Lots of practical examples of where, when, and how to use these signposts. . . a very easy read too.

luvtulearn, I just had to look into that even though I already have 10 books sitting in a stack ready for me to tackle. I'm going to hold off for now as I downloaded some bookmarks based on the book but I'm intrigued. EDIT: I just ordered it from Amazon

"Grammar Keepers: Lessons That Tackle Students' Most Persistent Problems Once and for All." It came out just this year and tackles grammar issues in grades 4-12 through daily journaling. It seems like a painless way to infuse grammar which is so desperately needed (I know I will learn so much as I begin to teach from it ).

I really like this author- Rozlyn Linder Ph.D. I have her Common Core Chart books and her Informational Text one. They are easy to read and very practical. I also love Notice and Note and use it in my fifth grade classroom.

I would suggest, No More-"I'm Done". It changed how I teach writing.

If you haven't read an old book called Mosaic of Thought, now's your chance. There are newer books about reading that I like (Notice and Note is one), but none I love like Mosaic. Truly it changed my thinking and is part of my classroom every day. I recently built a synthesis unit based on Mosaic and then had a big conversation with a 6th grade teacher about it--they're still using the comprehension strategies in middle school, too.

I second the book whisperer, and am going to have to check out the No More I'm done!

I'd also add "Mindset" by Carol Dweck - fantastic book about how the way we and others perceive things impacts our actions and choices.

I agree with Roz Linder's books. I wish she did PD. I would love to see her in action. Her blog is good too.

I plan to create some of her anchor charts on the computer this summer and then cut and paste them with my students to create them.

I'm going to spend a lot of time with her writing book.

It's fun reading through all of the great suggestions! It sounds like I need to check out Notice and Note this summer. 😊

Room 205, I think you will really enjoy reading Mindset! Another book that ties into the same message (Growth/Fixed Mindsets), but is focused on the classroom setting is Teaching that Changes Lives. I'm about halfway through it and it is fascinating.

Here's to a productive, yet relaxing summer! 😎

Mosaic of thought was a revelation for me, and I reread it regularly. Used it in 1st, 3rd and 5th grade and it works!

No more I'm done is great too - it's on my summer list again as I am moving up.

I'll put Notice and Note on my wish list.

The other day, a new young teacher said the way I got excited about my summer professional reading list was 'cute' After almost 30 years of teaching, I took it as a compliment

I just started The Smartest Kids in the World and How They Got That Way by Amanda Ripley. Very interesting so far. Catching Readers Before They Fall by Pat Johnson and Katie Keier is on my summer list.

I am sure there will be more, but as of now I will be reading Everyday Editing by Jeff Anderson. I have wanted to read it in the past so I was happy when out literacy coach told us that she got our principal to purchase a copy for each of us.

My friend just recommended The Reading Strategies Book by Jennifer Serravallo. I have a gift card for Barnes and Nobles but it is out of stock.

I would definitely recommend Mindset. My principal bought each teacher a copy for last summers reading. She then referred to it at various times throughout the year at different staff and grade level meetings - which kept it "alive" for us. I HIGHLY recommend Mindset!

Happy reading everyone!
