Urgent RTI

Hello friends, I need your help.
I have 3 students that came to second grade reading at level 4. I must refer them RTI. However, I'm not sure what to do. I have their DRA level which is 3 and 4 and I have their fluency also. What else can I use to keep track of their progress? I will appreciate any help you can give me.

I don't use DRA I use Fountas and Pinnel but quickly looked up the equivalent. You should be providing them with tier 2 interventions at least, if not tier 3 interventions. I would look into getting AIMSweb to keep track of data, but you can track things like CVC words, CVVC words, vowel patterns, fluency rate, comprehension of beyond, within, and about the text questions, sight words (over time), letters and sounds, non-sense words.

Does your school have a form you fill out to refer students into RTI.. or are students automatically put in based on testing scores? Get in touch with the reading specialist or academic intervention team.. whatever your school has for students.

I hope I answered your question, it seemed like you wanted info on how to track data and what data to track. If your looking for suggestions on specific interventions for tier 2 & 3 let me know and I can suggest those things too.

I have submitted the student to RTI, we have not met on him yet. But when I do I need to have graphs on what he is doing. I have comprehension tests and oral fluency. I need more. You said CVC, CVVC words, that is what I need. Thank you.

Our child study team often considers sight words. With students this low, can they name all the letters of the alphabet (upper and lower case) and know all of the sounds? Our Reading Recovery teacher also includes an assessment of written language where students have 10 minutes to write all of the words they can.

Your intervention must match the child's deficiency. Too often I see teachers doing an intervention that does not target the weakness. You need to look closely at what they are and are not successful with. Find where the breakdown is and go from there. Here is a link to a great resource for Rti.

http://schoolwires.henry.k12.ga.us/c...ok_Revised.pdf

If the link doesn't work, just google: rti henry county.

I shared this resource with all the staff at my school and everyone loves it.

If they are not using something from this resource, they have their rti kids in an extra guided reading group and use a warm read running record for their data point.

If fluency is the issues, then The Helps Program is an excellent free resource, but you must be committed to training yourself and implementing it with fidelity.

Also, make sure they have had their eyes and ears checked by a doctor recently. That should be the 1st thing in the RTI packet.
