I'm new to RC so I'm wondering, what would be a good morning message for the first day of school? Does anyone have any samples of messages you've done throughout the year that you'd be willing to share? Thanks again... so many questions

I used a morning message similar to this for the first day in my 4th grade room...

Dear students,
I am so excited to be your teacher this year!
Today we will learn names and get to know more about each other.
I hope you are excited to be in fourth grade!!!

I kept it short and simple on the first day, so that even my lowest readers could read the message. I also want them to get into the routine of reading it every morning! Hope this helps!

Should I have some type of interactive piece, or is it too soon for that?

I do an interactive aspect on day one because I want them to develop that routine right off the bat. I do something simple and not academic, for example....what is your favorite color...school subject....thing about summer.

I wait until the second day to do an interactive piece. This way they've already experienced reading the message and then I can model during morning meeting how to write on the chart and have the kids practice responding to the question one at a time. For the first couple weeks, i keep the responses simple using tallies, checkmarks, or just having them write their initials.

I suppose it would be different depending on the grade level and the children's past experience with RC. I teach 4th and in our building Morning Meeting is mandatory, so by the time they get to 4th they have been doing it for 4 years now.

I also have an interactive piece on the first MM. I have them add a flower to a graden, or draw their face to show how they feel... But you can decide for yourself based on what you know about your incoming class what they will need!
