Sewing: Hat, mittens, scarf

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I have pulled a tag for an 8-year-old girl from the Salvation Army Angel tree. A coat was on the list of needed items. I purchased a coat that looked royal blue in the store and it has multicolored foil-looking stars all over it. I have a TON of fleece in my hoard so I thought I could find something that I could use. When I held purple and lavender fabrics up to the coat, the coat looked blue. When I tried a variety of blue fabrics, the coat looked purple. I took the coat with me to JoAnn's and searched and searched. Star fabric was too much. Rainbow fabric didn't work. I looked at solids and every time I held up a color which WAS in the stars, that color seemed to disappear and then the color with the coat just didn't look right. I found an extra set of shelves with fleece down the middle aisle and this multicolor fabric jumped out at me. It was perfect!

I used OLD patterns Simplicity 3534 for the hat, which I added an inside layer of solid yellow so that it's toasty. I also doubled the layers for the mittens and used McCall 5993. Because of the double layer, the seam attaching the band is kind of thick and will wobble back and forth. I think I will hand blanket stitch it to keep it in place. For the scarf, I cut a 17" wide piece of fabric, sewed it together on one edge and topstitched along both long edges. I also sewed across each end at 3" and cut 1" strips to the stitching line for fringe.
