I am new to teaching math in the classroom. I like number talks, and I would really like to use them in the classroom. What are your feeling about them? What are some good ideas that I could use?

hearing comments about this. I recently purchased 10 rekenreks at a very good price and used them with some dialogue I found on line but it was not natural and awkward, but I think it is worth pursuing.

Number Talks are a great way to start the day in math. It can become a routine way to warm-up. Number Talks encourage math communication from all students. They provide structured practice for mental math as well as promote the value in using mental math to compute. Number Talks promote the importance of being flexible with numbers and using a variety of strategies for computation.

I do use number talks. I think it is very useful in building children's awareness of the multiple strategies that can be used to figure out a problem. I use dot counting and addition and subtraction problems.

Number talks are great! They show you what your students know and they get the students thinking. Number talks also give the students confidence in themselves. The students are proud of themselves when they can do a problem all on their own in their heads. Anything that is hands-on for the students also usually really helps as well. I hope this helps!
