Clip to ScrapBook #1

Observation time has come again. I should be having my observation within the week or 2. We have to do it in literacy - so Im doing Reading Wkshp. The unit we are on is "Readers Think and Talk about the Characters in Our Books: Characters Go on Journeys" - 2nd grade and "Meeting the Characters in Books and Studying what to do" - 1st grade - we use TC reading workshop. Does anyone have any ideas??? I teach 1st/2nd grade self contained.....

I am doing Characters in good times and bad. The unit is on the TC website.
I just did a lesson where the students touch the characters and think out what the character might be thinking. This is inferring. Then they can take notes on post-it notes to share during partner reading time.

I hope this helps....

I saw something-- I don't remember if it was from a Debbie Miller conference or from TC- where kids "step into a book." You make a color transparency of an important page from a book they really know. Then they "step into the book" by standing in front of the projector and being in the scene. They practice saying aloud what the character is thinking or saying or doing. Make a couple more transparencies for small groups to practice on.
