Readers Workshop Sample Schedule

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Hi all! I just got my schedule for the upcoming school year, and I have to have my reading block in the afternoon due to ESE/ESOL scheduling. This was disappointing to me, as I teach first grade, and I've always taught reading first thing in the morning when the students are at their "freshest".

I would love to see some options on how to schedule my readers workshop in a way that would be best for little first graders in the afternoon. My reading block needs the following components:

-Shared Reading
-Word Work
-Independent Reading/One on One Conferences
-Buddy Reading/Guided Reading

I have a 90 minute reading block, so if anyone is good with scheduling and can show me some ideas on what order to put these components in, and for how long, I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE IT!!!

For example, right now I'm thinking:
Shared Reading - 20 min
Word Work - 20 min
Independent Reading - 15 min
Buddy Reading - 20 min
Share - 10 min

This is how I've done it in the past, but I'm worried that having this setup in the afternoon will be too much :-/

Also - those of you that do Readers Workshop, do you do a mini-lesson AND a shared reading lesson, or do you consider that the same thing?

I just bought Jennifer Serravallo's new book- Teaching Reading in Small Groups. This book is amazing and stays true to RW. Lucy Calkins wrote the forward. I especially like her explicit strategies for teaching small groups in a conference format, not guided reading. She separates shared reading from the mini-lesson. I am going to follow her sample schedule. The sample second grade schedule is as follows:

Minilesson - 7 minutes
Read alone- 15 minutes
Partnership - 10 minutes
Read alone- 15 minutes
Share - 5 minutes

This is one of the best books I bought this summer!

My RW schedule usually is:

1.Minilesson: 15 minutes

2.Ind. Reading/guided reading/indv. conferences: 30-40 minutes--- this could be broken but I teach 3rd

3. share: 5 minutes
