Classroom info - Third grade, 26 kids, no assistant. Must meet with reading groups everyday. Currently, I have 5 groups total. I have 110 minutes for reading. I feel like our reading time needs a change and I would like to implement D5...how should I schedule reading time with this? Also, I would love advice on small reading group instruction, rotations, etc......Thanks!!!!

Is that JUST for reading? or writing too?

Do you need to meet with all 5 groups every day?

If so that is ridiculousssss.

15 minute lesson- teach a comprehension strategy
30 minute read to self to practice the skill
15 minute share time

15 minute lesson- teach a vocabulary or phonics lesson
30 minute daily 5 choice (i do daily 3 to make it easier: read to self, work on writing, or word work)

Meet with 3 groups (10 minutes for each group) during Read to Self time.
Meet with 2 groups during Daily 5 choice time.

D5--really only D3--I do 3 rotations per day 30ish minutes each. I have 5 groups, I meet with my highest group only once a week, my lowest group every day my, my second lowest group 4 days per week, my 2nd highest group 2 days per week and my middle group 3 days per week. I do a focus lesson for part of one of the rotations each day. I met with my groups the week before I started guided reading and gave them 3-5 books, at their level(s) eg. N/O and had them read a page from each, then the group voted on the book they wanted to read. They were very excited.

I should have specified about meeting times...sorry! I meet with my 3 lowest groups everyday, my 2nd highest group 3 times a week, and my highest group 2 times a week. With that many kiddos in a class and no assistant, I think p understands that there is no way to meet with all five of them everyday. This is just my reading time because I have about 45 minutes for writing in the afternoon. I like the schedule you posted! Thanks!

Thanks so much for posting the schedule you use. I have though about doing D3, too. How long do you have for reading?
