Has anyone adapted some of her ideas for 3rd grade? The 40 Book Challenge, check out system, sustained silent reading time, genre, picture books vs. chapter books, fitting in a basal series that is district mandated?

TIA

I used the 40 Book challenge this year with my grade 4 class (40 in fourth) I apprehensively started it in October but am so glad I did. While only a half of my class finished it, I think all students read more widely and read more in quantity.
Now I am moving to third grade so I am planning to use '30 in 3rd' I will make a grid with different genres (lots with choice). I will also make sure to include time each week to catch up with our reader's notebook.
I read the book 'Nightmare at the Bookfair' as my first read aloud. It was a great introduction to genres--each chapter is an example of a different genre.
I love the philosophy of the Book Whisperer!

I am reading the book now and am inspired. I too would like to implement a 30 in third grade challenge. What genres would you use? Would you include picture books?

Sounds like a great intro to genres for 3rd grade! Thanks. I like the 30 for 3rd idea also. I am about halfway through the Book Whisperer. It seems to tie in really well with Daily 5. What do you think?
