1/2 days suck sometimes

So glad I found this forum. I recently went back to substitute teaching in k-6 after a hiatus where I taught preschool for many years.

One of my frustrations is when they call for an afternoon sub on a 1/2 school day and Iím left running around to different classes asking teachers to give me things to copy to fulfill my hours. I am left feeling stupid and frustrated :/ just needed to vent I guess.

Welcome, Dogmom!

Vent away, in a place where we understand the unique joys and aggravations of being a sub. Iím amazed that your district actually pays for a 1/2 day afternoon sub on an early release day. Never heard of that, and no wonder youíre frustrated.

Honestly I just take the day off instead of working a half day, itís totally not worth it for me.

I only do it if I think I can get some "brownie points" for doing it.

There are no brownie points where I am. You can be awesome or totally lazy and you get the same big fat zero nothing in feedback or appreciation.

Same here regarding brownie points.

I used to take jobs when my sub coordinator or schools called and asked me to.

Eventually I learned you don't get anything back in return except for spam soliciting calls.

I avoid half days unless I need to do something the other half day. Too many times I've been left with half a day's pay when I could of worked the whole day.

I've picked up two half days at the same school only to have one of the half days cancel on me (so she could have her friend sub for her). Or an AM assignment at one school and a PM assignment at another; first school wants you to stay but you can't because the PM assignment is in the neighboring district.

Or you're at school A in the morning and school B in the afternoon. Another sub is at school B in the morning and school A in the afternoon (actually set up by the district). School A holds you until the sub from school B gets there. End result is you get no lunch and the secretary from school B calls while you are your way and is screaming about coverage (how it is going to cost $25.00 for a coverage and that is coming out of my sub pay of $80.00).

Half days... Been there, done that, don't want to do it again.

It's better to work the morning am. Sometimes they'll ask you to fill in for the rest of the day if someone gets sick and has to leave. On two occasions when I took a PM half day, they called to tell me they found another teacher or building sub to cover that "one class." I also feel I'm under extra scrutiny coming in "late." One time the security guard asked if he could check my bag. Ugh!

I'm your 1/2 day sub girl! Those are the majority of my jobs! I have to drop my kids off to school so I can basically only do 1/2 jobs. I do full days about 4x a month.

1/2 days sub jobs are $60 here whether you take AM or PM.
