Too much drama

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I'm working a long-term sub job for a fifth grade intervention specialist. I like the job just fine, but there is so much drama I'd like to quit. This school has two rounds of bussing at dismissal. I happen to be assigned second round, which means I keep the kids an extra 30 minutes. It's basically babysitting. First drama was a fifth grade girl on Tic Toc. I told her to put her phone away. She argued. I said I could hold the phone during second round. She then had the audacity to walk to another classroom, call her mom (using the phone I just told her to put away) and tell her mom that I said I was going to take the phone for the whole year. So then mom called the girl's homeroom teacher and it all blew up into a big mess. No one is very happy with me because this incident changed what teachers can allow their own kids to do during second round, I guess bc it looks like hypocrisy.

For example, if a teacher's high school kid comes in after school, they cannot be in their mom's room on their phone. So things changed in a bad way for veteran teachers and their own kids. Keep in mind all I wanted her to do was put the phone away, not change the routine for other teachers. No one is being mean to me, but there is a detectable undertone of irritation now. Second drama, very next day, was my own son being picked on by three of my second round group. They all ganged up on him over UNO rules. (He was right, by the way). So three little bratty kids are sitting there making fun of MY son RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME. Laughing at him, taunting. So mean. So of course I lost my temper and laid them out. They said I was scary. I know this will generate more calls from parents, especially from the one who looked at me back when she was in third grade and said, "I have an IEP so I can do whatever I want." Her mom will come in and chew me out today. She is involved in cheer so she gets to come into the school whenever she wants without signing in, so she will be in my face before anyone even knows she is in the building. I don't think either kid would have acted like this with their regular teacher. I don't matter, however, bc I am just a sub. Just a sub. I have heard that for 9 years. So I think I'm all done with this business. Teaching isn't teaching. It is pacifying parents. I have been told that I am an excellent sub for years. But even now that I am a teacher, I am still just a sub. I don't want to do this anymore.

You probably know this, but there is a lot less parent "interaction" at the high school level, if you want to give that a shot. I don't do long term jobs. Isn't worth it to me. No contract. No tenure, etc. I don't even like three days in a row. By the time the third day arrives, the lesson plan is one sentence, if you're lucky.

Thos is why I never, ever take long terms. I wont even do two days in a row. The extra 10 dollars after the 10th day is NOT worth it! Can you request to be taken out without being blacklisted?

Good advice.

I've accepted four long term assignments in my subbing career.

All of them were ridiculous. Very little support from admin or other teachers.

Not worth the disrespect.
