Hi! Every year our school has a door decorating contest that celebrates Red Ribbon week which is Drug Free Awareness week. This year our theme is "If you're not drug free, you can't hang with me" or "Drug free, I CAN be anything I want to be". My problem is that this occurs during our open house and also two days before Halloween. I like to decorate during the month of October with fall colors and pumkins. Any ideas on how to incorporate both fall and the door decorating contest?
Last year I used "You would have to be BATTY to use drugs". I took brown paper and twisted it to make a tree up the corner by my door and then branched out with several more twisted pieces to make limbs. I then had kids to color bats in different poses hanging upside down and had them hanging from the tree. We also placed pumpkins around the bottom along with fall color leaves. We made the leaves out of coffee filters colored with water based markers in fall colors (use several different colors on one filter to get cool leaves). Once the filters were colored we sprayed/misted with water to get the colors to run together. After the filters dried, we cut them in leaf shapes for the tree. We ended up tieing for first place.
What do you think of making the bats hanging up side down and then have the theme, If you are not drug freee, you cannot hang with me! I think that would be cute. You can even make it look like he is hanging from monkey bars or something like that.
For my daughter's kindergarten class I did " Say Boo to Drugs" and let the kids trace their hands and then turn them upside down and put a face on the palm of the hand and it made it a ghost. I did the letters in orange, the door in black and the ghost prints in white.
I took the phrase (from earthgirl) of "If You Are Not DRUG Free, You Can't Hang With Me" and had the kids make spiders that we are going to hang in the hall and around the entrance to my room. I made a landscape and the kids are coloring spiders of all different kinds and colors, cutting them out and they are going to place them on the landscape area. My colors are brown (for dirt), red (letters) and a black background. I think when we get it up it will be neat. The spiders that will be hanging from the ceiling will be made from black pompoms and pipe cleaners.
I think that I'm going to do the background with purple and black bats and a brown tree with the different colored leaves for fall, and see how it works.
I used the suggestion for the leaves to make them out of coffee filters. They turned out beautiful and the students enjoyed making them!
I also hung bats from the ceiling in the hallway. I used fishing string to do this and it turned out great!
i saw a cute idea at my school..the door said "Beleaf in yourself...stay drug free" the door was decorated with a tree, children's handprints were the leaves (colorful).
You could put a tree on your door and fill it with fall colored leaves!! Then to go along with your "If you're not drug free you can't hang with me" theme you could have leaves falling(no longer hanging) off the tree!! This would fit into both fall and drug free themes!! Cut out your theme letters to hang at top of your door!!
Last year we had a door decorating contest, too...
I did
"Too Sweet for Drugs"
and we took candy wrappers and put tem all arund the door. It turned out really cute.
Last year, I had a Christopher Columbus (Body Size) theme and my title was, "We are sailing into a Drug Free World." The students made small boats and decorated them themselves.
Don't Be A NumSkull Be Drug Free. Black paper on door have tombstone (2) at base have skelleton sitting on tombstones holding a joint with a red circle with a slash through it around the joint. Also decorate by adding phrases around him like say boo to drugs etc. To top it off I had Skull lights surrounding the door.

One year I covered my door with black paper and my 6th graders did their handprints in white paint upside down. We glued google eyes to make ghosts and did "Drugs are Scarey" It was way cute and won the contest.
Last year I covered my door with green paper and the kids made skeletons with q-tips (cut, to make ribs, head, legs, and arms). We glued them to the paper. Then drew tombstones with black marker. The title said, "No Bones About It-We're Drug Free!" We came in 1st runner up! Very fun!
