Clip to ScrapBook #1

Here is a link to my classroom pictures. I have been working on it for the start of school in late August....Thought I would share since I have gotten so many great ideas from the great teachers here on PT. Read captions to know more about the picture.

Thanks!

I love your room. The thing I like most about your room is the amount of books you have in your room!

Your kids are going to have a literature-rich learning environment, that's for sure. My kids also start school in three weeks. So, I'm busy putting my room together as well. Thanks for sharing -- got some really great ideas (although I'm a bit jealous, too, of all your wall space ) Have a great year!

Status Board
Old 08-04-2011, 05:22 PM

Clip to ScrapBook #14

When the students are checking in and telling me what they want to do, they use this board to know what is available to do. I have one of my "helpers" be the Vanna White and turn the card that student chooses over so that way the rest of the class knows what is taken. I have a simple rule in my class is that they have to do each Daily 5 before they can repeat. I keep track in my notebook and the kids use their own tracking sheet (one that I found here on PT!). In my class, their book boxes stay with them at all times and if the are an "earlier finisher" they are trained they may either read from their box or write in their journal. This is why I don't require Read to Self and Work on Writing everyday.

So if a student wants to do Work on Writing, they can use the Status Board to see what activities are available. If they choose "Writing Cubes" then the helper would turn it backwards so you can't see it anymore. Then the students after him/her will know that isn't a choice any longer. This speeds up "check-in" because they know what is available right away. At the end of each round the helps flips the cards back around.

I don't know if you can see in the pictures, but on the pocket chart I used a label maker to place letters down the sides. This allows students to know where the activity is located - these are located in the white drawers (another picture). The helper will also tell the student which letter to locate their activity. IE. "Writing Cubes is in tray D".

This procedure too, helps when I switch things out. I don't have to relabel things, I simply remove the sentence strip and put the new activity in the tray and a new sentence strip in the pocket chart.

Do these trays remove? Do they pull it out and bring it to their spot to begin working, or do they bring the contents to their spot, and the drawer stays in place? Thanks!

your status board AND the way you have coded the board and drawers - AND the easy way you can swap them out...You really should SHARE this with the Sisters. I can see them being SO impressed - and thanks for sharing with us! I am heading to school shortly to continue setting up my room. You've given me new food for thought!

for guiding me how to put together the centers. I had no clue where to begin. Is there a chart that guides students to the right bin so that "Vanna" doesn't have to do all the work?

I know it is expensive...if I remember correctly, I found a website that offered it much cheaper than most places (I wish I could remember the site)....anyhow, this was my birthday gift one year.

The only thing "Vanna" does is flip the card and then tell the student what tray to get (most students know where it is at after a few a bit anyway) EI. Tray C

The student who made the choice will go get the tray. The trays remove from the stack and are taken to the students individual self space.

Yes, the tray drawers remove after a little modification. When you buy them they have two plastic tabs on the back of the drawer that stops them from coming out. I simply cut them off with a pair of scissors and now they come out with ease.

These drawers are the 8.5x11 Sterlite drawers.
