Christmas Presents

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I teach in a Catholic school, so we still celebrate Christmas. For years, I have ordered pencils with student names for Christmas, but am looking for a different idea. Does anyone out there give their students Christmas presents!

has great deals on books. If you save your bonus points, you can get them for free. I usually give them a book for Christmas and at the end of the year. I make custom stickers to put in the front.

I, too, save points and buy books for the students. the past couple years I find really cheap gloves for my 1st grades and have given those too. Students love the gloves.

Showerboard - Whiteboards

I buy a big sheet of shower board from Lowe's or Home Depot. Then cut it into about 12x12 squares for each student. Usually if they know your are a teacher, they will cut it for free at Lowes.... It is an instant whiteboard. I give them a marker to go with it....they love having their own. It also gives them something to do during the "party" day when the get their gifts - usually the last day before Winter break for us.

I buy the $1 books from Scholastic each month until Christmas. I try to vary the books so they are at the kids just right levels and individualize to their interests. Often at the beginning of the year you get free books with your orders, so I use those too. I usually give the kids 2-3 books each, depending on how many books I've collected. I give them each a fancy pencil too.

I stopped giving individual gifts. I ask the kids to make a list of things they might like me to buy for the classroom and we vote on one or two (depending on how expensive they are). That way the gift stays with the room from year to year. Once I let them know that the hundreds of Legos they play with were a choice from several years ago they get very excited about choosing something to stay in the room. I have a sign in my room with the class year, a class picture and a picture of what they wanted me to purchase.
