Words Their Way or Sitton Spelling?

I am not very familiar with WTW, however had seen many posts on PT and have been reading about it online. My district currently does Sitton Spelling....I haven't been real impressed with this program. I am just wondering if any PT'ers out here have used both and which one you preferred?

Or if you can offer any opinions or advice on WTW that would be great too!
Thanks!

I would love to hear ideas as well. I used the basal's spelling last year (I was new and was already overwhelmed); however, I do have WTW.

I am not familiar with Sitton Spelling, but Words Their Way allows you to differentiate between the students' spelling levels. Some need to know the spelling rules for -ow/-ou and some need to know initial letter sounds.

I use WTW and love it! Our spelling program is way too easy for most kids and it seems a little random. WTW allows me to challenge the high kids (without just giving them more words) and it gives the low kids what they need. I have some who start with pictures so they can practice hearing the sounds. It is more work, but I think it is what is best for kids!

I use Sitton and I do like it. JUst me, not my school. Everyone kind of does their own thing. Not good. I have read WTW and always wanted to implement it, but am just overwhelmed with the logistics. I don't know how I would keep track of who is sorting what and hold them accountable. Also, it seems like it would take a lot of time. We have not instruction time to teach spelling. It has to be incorporated in our reading or writing time.

Is there some type of pre-assessment that you all use to determine which list/level they should be on...and, what do you do if your top students master all the WTW lists? I am very interested in doing this...sounds like there's a rationale behind it, instead of just giving spelling activities that turn into "busy work."

Yes there is a pre-assessment that determines which subgroup they would fall under. It's not a hassle at all. Group the students by a number, color, animal, etc. Letter name spellers = tigers, derivational spellers = lions, within word spellers = bears (for example).

I teach sitton and hate it! I love words their way and have seen more progress in my students than I did with sitton.

Our school "adopted" Sitton, but we use WTW. We love it, we have seen such an improvement in student's spelling. It is a lot to manage but we have four teachers in our grade level. We each take a "spelling group" to help us manage all of the different levels.
