Words Their Way ?

I have been looking at WTW and was wondering what activities it involves. It is strictly word sorts or are there other components of the program?

What do the kids do on a daily basis? Are there lists of words for the kids to study? Is there a test?

Thanks for your info and help!

I use WTW. Besides the sorts there is an spelling inventory administered to determine students level of understanding about the make up of words. From this you determine where to start students with spelling instruction.

Also there are games that can be used during word study to help reinforce the concepts being taught.

Spelling list are based on the assessment and they are also a part of the program.

The pre-assessment also gives insight into why a student may be having trouble with decoding certain words.

I feel that out of all the spelling programs out there, WTW has the BEST inventory / assessment. You can really determine where each student is in the development of spelling and gear instruction for spelling groups. I use the same inventory to reassess throughout the year.
However, I do feel WTW lacks in high frequency words, so I combine them in with my WTW lists. My district adopted this program and a spelling team compiled each list and the word cards that go with it into an easily accessible electronic version. Each week I just look up the list number I am on, print it, and teach!
