Writing with "CRAZY PENS"

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I had to share this great idea I got from attending one of Melissa Forney's writing workshops. This is a great way to motivate students to write and make it fun! She encourages teachers to designate one day a month (or however often you want to make it) where students write with Crazy Pens! Students are able to choose a crazy pen to use for writing on that day.

A teacher at the workshop asked, "But what if the student plays with the pen". Melissa's answer, "That's the point! Let them. Allow students to have fun and associate writing with fun activities."

So...as a result of that great idea, I began my collection of crazy pens. I purchased most of my crazy pens from www.officeplayground.com. Some of the pens I got were on sale for $1.00. I also found some crazy pens at my local Office Depot ($2.00 each). Oriental Tradings has crazy pens too but they are usually sold in sets of 12. You could still use Oriental Tradings if you pair up with different teachers and each of you purchases a different set to share with the others. Once you purchase your pens, store them in a plastic bin. I got my bin at Target but any clear bin will work just as well.

What a neat way to make writing fun and exciting for students! Below is a picture of my crazy pens box. I can't wait to use this idea with my students! I already know they'll look forward to writing on Crazy Pen Day!

Great idea...I hope my 7th grade students aren't too cool for this one, because I'm collecting pens!

I am going to start collecting "Crazy Pens" too. I have collected some from my classroom, but I never thought to use them to influence their writing and associating with writing is fun. Thanks a lot.

I'm sure they would love the idea. There are so many crazy and cool pens to collect. I have to admit, I've been a pen collector for years (Is there a 12 step program for that?) and now that I'm using crazy pens in my class for writing I'm going to continue to go crazy looking for more pens to add to this collection.

Cute idea! I might have to use pencils since I teach 2nd grade and they do a lot of erasing!

I actually don't use pens for anything else in my class but I thought about just doing this once a month or so and let the kiddies write with crazy pens instead. I know what you mean about the erasing.

This seems like yet another GREAT Idea I've found on PT!
Is there a 12 step program for this site? I'm addicted!

I'm glad you liked this idea and my apologies for causing you to spend more money. Believe me...that's what PT does for me too. I find a great idea, go for it, and end up spending more money. In the long run, I know it will be put to use and be really beneficial to my students.

I have always told my kids "no pens," but now I am excited about the use of pens! I just visited office playground and placed an order .. who knew pens could be so much fun. Thanks for a wonderful idea! If I'm this excited to use the crazy pens, I can't imagine my kids!

What a great idea! I love it and will be ordering some pens (not that I really need more pens, I too need the 12-step program).

Thanks for the site also, I just found my Koosh ball that my cat decided to eat half of!

Awesome! So glad you love the idea and love the site! I'm with you with regards to compulsive pen buying. There really should be a 12-step program for that! Have fun with Crazy Pen Writing Day!

That OfficePlayground site looks great for purchasing the pens, but does anyone have an idea of what shipping costs from their site?

I have not thought of this myself! I love it! Cheap, easy and not taking away from the writing! My fourth graders will just love that it is a pen instead of a pencil!!
